My friends have just been to Thorpe Park in the UK for a birthday day out and had a fantastic time. I haven’t been there in years so I searched out a recent video to show you the theme park rides on offer there for 2010.

Thorpe Park was always considered a bit tame compared to Alton Towers but it has improved over the years. Not sure it qualifies as the “Thrill Capital” as stated at the beginning of the video but it definitely has a good selection of exciting looking theme park rides.

Going to have to take a trip there soon.

Cool Theme Park Rides

There are many cool theme park rides around the world so it is hard to focus on just one or two. Here are just some of the ones I’d like to ride in the near future.

Firstly, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has finally opened and as a huge Harry Potter fan I’d love to go and take in the whole experience, but I’m especially looking forward to trying the Dragon Challenge (definitely the Chinese Fireball for me) and the Forbidden Journey (the theme park’s signature ride, although it looks more like an “event”):

Another cool ride I would love to try out is one I wrote about in this post on new theme park rides – Intimidator at Carowinds:

Inspired by NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt, the ride has some really steep drops and reaches some impressive speeds. Unfortunately, I’m unlikely to make it to North/South Carolina anytime soon.

Camelot Theme Park Rides

Camelot is a Theme Park in North West of England. Naturally, with a name like that, it is based around the legend of King Arthur, and the Camelot theme park rides generally follow this theme too.

Camelot is a fun family day out but it is unlikely to satisfy roller coaster enthusiasts. Knightmare is the most intense of the rides and does offer a good thrill, hitting an impressive 5Gs at times.

Apart from Knightmare, there’s Whirlwind, Excalibur, The Log Flume, and a bunch of more child friendly rides, but they’re all standard fare.

By all means take the kids and have a family day out – you’ll have fun – but don’t expect a day of thrills from the rides.

Old Theme Park Rides

Sometimes old theme park rides can be the most enjoyable (and scary). Wooden roller coasters have a unique sound that clunks and rattles and leaves you feeling less than comfortable about the safety of the ride.

Of course, any roller coaster operating today (even after decades) is subject to the same strict regulations, but it’s the impression of being less safe that adds to the thrill.

Old theme park rides move differently from their more modern counterparts too. Both will jolt you around but in modern roller coasters that’s usually due to the sheer acrobatics of the ride moving through loops and twists. On older rides the jolts are perhaps more predictable for the rider but are like driving an older car where you feel every bump in the road!

Port Aventura Theme Park Rides

Port Aventura in Salou, Spain (about an hour out of Barcelona is one of Europe’s premier theme parks and a “must visit” for any European theme park fan. The most thrilling of the Port Aventura theme park rides include Furius Baco (0 to 135 kmph in 3 seconds), Stampida, and Dragon Khan (8 loops at 110 kmph).

This pov video shows Dragon Khan in action [warning: the girl has a high pitched scream - you might want to turn the volume down a bit]:

The rides at Port Aventura are classed as children’s, soft, moderate and high, with the 3 mentioned earlier all fitting into the final category along with Hurakan Condor – a free fall ride that drops you almost 100m.

Roller Coaster Videos POV

If you’ve been browsing Youtube for videos of theme park rides, you may be wondering what roller coaster videos pov means. POV stands for point of view i.e. you are seeing what the rider is seeing and, in my opionion, the best videos of rides are those taken from a pov perspective.

It can be really tempting to take videos of your face (and those of your friends) when you are on a roller coaster – and for you and your friends they will probably be really amusing videos. But if you plan on showing these videos to others and sharing them on YouTube then most people will not want to watch strangers screaming and pulling faces for 3 minutes.

The pov video gives the viewer a really good feel of the ride and how exciting it is. It doesn’t quite match actually being on the ride but it is the best alternative to being there.

Take a look at this short pov video of the Top Thrill Dragster ride at Cedar Point – isn’t this much more exciting that watching the riders faces?

Extreme Theme Park Rides

There are too many extreme theme park rides to name in this one post but I was looking at some videos from Cedar Point in Ohio and realized they have a high proportion of truly extreme rides including Maverick, Top Thrill Dragster and Millennium Force.

This video shows Maverick which launches at 70mph, has a vertical drop of 95 degrees and includes a twisted horseshoe roll:

Millennium Force at Cedar Point is possibly even more extreme with a 93mph, 80 degree drop and reaching heights of 320mph – not one for those of you who hate heights:

Regardless of which one is the scariest (let me know which you prefer) a trip to Cedar Point based in Sandusky, Ohio, is worth a trip for any roller coaster or theme park enthusiast with its range of excellent rides.

Silverwood Theme Park Rides

Silverwood Theme Park in Idaho is the largest theme park in the Northwest USA and features over 65 rides and a Water Park. Some of the Silverwood theme park rides you can enjoy include 4 roller coasters in an area of the park called Roller Coaster Alley – Tremors, Timber Terror, Aftershock and Corkscrew – along with Panic Plunge, which is a 140 foot free fall tower that drops riders down at 47mph.

I’m always on the lookout for more funny rollercoaster videos and I just came across this one on YouTube.

This was taken on the SAW ride at Thorpe Park in the UK:

The faces this guy is pulling are hilarious. His girlfriend seems to look quite serene through most of it (except when she’s laughing at him) but his face is all over the place.

Yet again, he’s trying to act all cool at the beginning and end – but it’s too late….it’s all on camera!

Hershey Park Roller Coaster Videos

Hershey Park in Hershey, PA combines 2 of my major passions: roller coasters and chocolate, so it already sounds like a great place to me. But what about the Hershey Park roller coaster videos?

Hershey Park has 11 roller coasters, including the boomerang style Sidewinder seen in the video above. This is a high speed rides that propels you forward through 3 loops and then, after a brief respite, back again to the beginning.

In this video of the Lightening Racer roller coaster (a double track wooden coaster) you get a really great view of the extent of the track involved in some of these rides:

Other roller coasters at Hershey Park include Sooperdooperlooper, Storm Runner and Wild Mouse.

Opryland Theme Park Rides

The Opryland theme park in Nashville began life in 1972 and stayed open until 1997 when it was closed somewhat unexpectedly to make room for a new shopping mall. Originally billed as the “Home of American Music” the park was limited by its location and couldn’t expand to add new attractions. Before its closure the Opryland theme park rides included The Hangman, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Chaos, Wabash Cannonball and many more, as you can see in this video:

According to Wikipedia, all the large roller coasters and rides were sold to Premier Parks and while a couple of them (Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and The Hangman) ended up being re-purposed for Six Flags parks in the USA, many are believed to have rotted and rusted in a field in Indiana.

New Theme Park Rides

With yesterday’s talk of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, I thought I’d take a look at some of the other new theme park rides you can enjoy this year.

Carowinds, which is situated in both North and South Carolina, introduces Intimidator, a roller coaster inspired by NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt. Billed as the tallest, fastest AND longest roller coaster in the South-East, it promises to be an extreme ride with some steep, high drops and amazing speeds.

On a similar bend, Kings Dominion, Virginia has the Intimidator 305, also inspired by Earnhardt and billed as the “tallest and fastest gravity driven roller coaster on the East Coast”!

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Jackson, NJ launches its 10th season with a new water ride called The Tornado, which features a 60 foot high, 135 foot long vortex tunnel.

The Stratophere in Vegas is adding another attraction to its tower with Skyjump, which allows people to jump from the tower (to a platform below).

Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia is celebrating its 35th birthday with Europe in the Air – a simiulator that takes riders flying over some of the great sites of Europe.

Moving out of the USA, a whole new theme park is opening later this year in Abu Dhabi, with the first Ferrari themed park, promising to bring the Ferrari brand to life and including the world’s fastest roller coaster – Formula Rossa – reaching speeds of up to 240 km/hr.

And in the UK, at Alton Towers the new Th13teen ride, featuring the world’s first freefall drop, is proving to be such a shock for some riders that they have started having to hand out free underwear due to some unfortunate accidents. Ride that one at your peril!

Harry Potter Theme Park Rides

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is finally set to have its grand opening on June 18, 2010. Built within Universal Resort Orlando, there have been a number of delays (even those who have enjoyed a preview have found the site still under construction), $200 million spent and all involved remaining tight-lipped about the park’s secrets.

Now that the park is finally being revealed (instead of cgi mockups of what to expect), the Harry Potter theme park rides you can expect include: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey; the Dragon Challenge Roller Coaster (based on the Triwizard Tournament); and, for the younger fans, The Flight of the Hippogriff.

The Forbidden Journey promises to be a great event from start to finish, with the queue for the ride (expected to be a long one) taking you through parts of Hogwarts and meeting some of the book’s characters, and then the ride itself involves a flying adventure with Harry, Hermione and Ron.

Designers from the Harry Potter movies have played a huge part in the design of the theme park, and of course JK Rowling has maintained much of the creative control she has held over the Harry Potter brand.

Chessington Theme Park Rides

Chessington World of Adventures is based in Surrey in the UK and so is well placed for a day out if you are in the London area. The Chessington theme park rides aren’t among the scariest in the UK but the park does has something for all the family.

Teenagers and adults will enjoy Vampire (see video), Dragon’s Fury, and the new KOBRA, while young teens and older kids can ride Rattlesnake, Dragon Falls and Black Buccaneer. Much younger children have a choice of rides like Canopy Capers, Berry Bouncers and Flying Jumbos.

Chessington is unlikely to satisfy the real thrill seeker but if you’re looking for a place where all ages can enjoy theme park rides it’s a great choice for a day out.

Queensland Theme Park Rides

Queensland has a host of theme parks to choose from, especially on the Gold Coast, which is known as the Theme Park Capital of the Southern Hemisphere. So, if you’re looking for the best Queensland theme park rides the Gold Coast is a good place to start.

Dreamworld has the Big Six Thrill Rides – Giant Drop, Tower of Terror, Cyclone Rollercoaster, Wipeout, the Claw and Mick Doohan’s Motocoaster – or for the children there’s Nick Central and Wiggles World with Spongebob Flypants, the Big Red Car and the Runaway Reptar Roller Coaster.

Other theme parks include Warner Bros. Movie World, Whitewater World, Sea World (FYI, I was once kissed by a giant sealion at Sea World, Queensland), and Wet ‘n’ Wild Water World, all with some great rides.

Videos of Roller Coaster Accidents

With so many people able to take video on their mobile phones as well as a host of compact and low cost cameras, it’s inevitable that there are a number of videos of roller coaster accidents available online.

Thankfully, accidents on theme park rides don’t happen very often as there are strict laws governing theme parks in most countries (and naturally the parks themselves take safety very seriously to protect their reputations – I mean, who wants to spend the day at a theme park with a poor safety record?).

We included one such theme park accident video just a couple of months ago.

Sheikra Roller Coaster Video

This Sheikra roller coaster video may look vaguely familiar, because it is a very similar ride to yesterday’s video of Griffon. They are both vertical drop roller coasters (Sheikra was the first in the US) with a proper 90 degree drop, and there are just 5 of them around the world.

In 2007 Sheikra was converted into a floorless roller coaster – just to add to the thrill. You can find this ride at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Florida.

The Griffon just beats the vertical drop of Sheikra by 5 feet with a 205 foot 90 degree drop compared to Sheikra’s 200 feet.

Griffon Roller Coaster Video

This is a great Griffon roller coaster video courtesy of ThemeParkInsider.com. This roller coaster has it all – high climbs, vertical drops and even water!

You can find Griffon at Busch Gardens Europe, which is in Williamsburg, Virginia. I like this video for a variety of reasons:

1. you get a running commentary from a very dry “nothing phases me” guy

2. it’s POV (point of view) for the exciting parts of the ride, and

3. the kid next to the commentator who puts on his cool goggles for the ride!

I love toy roller coaster videos like this one. It’s amazing what you can now build yourself from a kit (although “toy” may be an understatement for these):

If you’d like to build your own roller coaster, I’ve added a few of the best kits you can buy on this page.

Not quite the adrenaline rush you would get from the real thing but the thrill and satisfaction of building these and seeing them run is pretty good.

Scary Roller Coaster Videos

Usually videos can’t even begin to convey how frightening a roller coaster can be, but I have been searching around for some scary roller coaster videos. Actually, the video of Saw: The Ride in the previous post did a good job of conveying the fear through the lack of any screaming.

My preference is for POV (point of view) videos, filmed at the front of the ride, and in fairly high quality, to really feel the scariness of a roller coaster. Vertical drops also do it for me, like this video of Oblivion at Alton Towers:

Personally, I find the videos filming the faces of the riders rather than seeing the ride ahead do very little more me. How about you?

SAW Roller Coaster Ride Videos

Some roller coaster ride videos are better than others. Most of the time I enjoy hearing the screams of people “enjoying” a roller coaster but this video is cool for the opposite reason.

It’s a pov video of SAW – The Ride at Thorpe Park in the UK, and the lack of any noise apart from the roller coaster itself really creates an intense atmosphere.

In fact, the video is probably better than the ride itself – great filming.

Redneck Rollercoaster Video

I saw the phrase “redneck rollercoaster video” and was naturally intrigued. I had visions of a rickety old roller coaster in some Virginia backwater with Charlie Daniels blaring out during the ride.

Turns out it is something very different as you’ll see from this video:

The vehicles are hooked up to be driven from that elevated seat at the front or back, and – depending on the number/weight of people on board – they aim to do wheelies and tilt so they mimic the experience of a roller coaster.

Hours of good “clean” fun!

With so many great parks around the world, there are plenty of Disney roller coaster videos available online – both official and those created by visitors and roller coaster fans.

This is a point-of-view (POV) video of Disney’s Expedition Everest roller coaster at Animal Kingdom in Disney World Florida. Not the scariest roller coaster but clearly frightening a few of those on board.

A nice touch to have it reach the end of the rails and then go backwards.

Roller Coaster Movies

I was trying to think of roller coaster movies, or at least films or TV shows that feature roller coaster quite heavily.

One that comes to mind immediately is a CSI episode where there is a roller coaster accident. Of course, one of the things that is revealed fairly early on about the character Grissom is that he loves to ride the coasters.

Then there is the 70s disaster movie entitled Roller Coaster. I never saw the film in the cinema (I was only 5) where it was shown in Sensurround which caused the audience seats to vibrate during the important ride scenes. I do remember it being a typical disaster movie that was typical of the 1970s and was watchable but not particularly good (see the video below)

Finally, another movie that springs to mind immediately is Final Destination 3, where the initial accident takes place on a roller coaster.

Any other favorites you can think of?

Update: Just discovered another one, also called Roller Coaster. I have now created a store to feature these Roller Coaster Movies and TV Shows – I will add to it as I come across more.

I have been looking for montages of roller coaster video clips, for something a bit different to feature on the blog, and I found this one I really like compiled from a trip to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

Roller coasters featured include Raptor, Maverick, Magnum XL-200 and Millennium Force.

Cedar Point calls itself the Roller Coaster Capital of the World although it shares the “highest number of roller coasters in a single amusement park” title with Six Flags Magic Mountain. However, it is the only park with 4 roller coasters taller than 200 feet, so maybe the title is deserved.

If you’re looking for some funny roller coaster videos I think you’ll enjoy this one.

This guy is trying so hard to look calm and collected in front of his girlfriend. Every time she looks at him he tried to put on this really cool “I can handle this” expression, but he’s clearly freaking out big time!

My advice to him is:

(a) never take your girlfriend to an amusement park ever again

(b) if you do, fake some neck injury so you don’t have to ride the roller coaster

There are so many Roller Coaster videos on Youtube it’s hard to just show one (which is why you’ll find tons of them on this blog – with more to come). They range from the basic amateur video to some pretty impressive promotional or media coverage videos.

This is one of the former but – man! – do you get to experience the ride along with them! I love this video – especially the vertical drop.

Keep an eye on YouTube as new roller coaster videos are being added all the time.

This Roller Coaster video is hilarious. It’s a song and animated video called “Roller Coaster Junkie” about a kid who is obsessed with riding roller coasters (I can relate and I dare say you can too)

If you go to Youtube you’ll find the linkto download the song as well. They’re even looking for someone to dub a POV video of Kingda Ka with the song (if you have such a video).

I love the faces the kid pulls and when he goes to the toilet while on the roller coaster. Excellent!

Theme Park Ride Videos

Who doesn’t enjoy theme park ride videos? There’s something infectious about watching other people enjoying themselves at a theme park as they scream, laugh and cry on different rides.

The funny thing about many theme park rides is they are really short – a quick thrill! They usually involve a great big build up (queuing, settling in, the first steep climb of the roller coaster) for what is essentially a short burst of enjoyment. Yet, people love them and return again and again.

This video is no exception. The process of settling into the cart, securing her in, and pulling the cart backwards up the slope, all seem excessive for the final few seconds of the ride “proper” but her laughs and screeches make it clear she loved every moment of it.

I guess the build up is as important as the theme park ride itself, for building the nervous excitement and increasing the adrenaline rush.

Th13teen Theme Park Video

Take a look at this Th13teen theme park video. It’s the new ride at Alton Towers. Initially it looks like just another roller coaster but then the free fall element does give it a bit of an edge.

There’s already quite a few videos of this online, even though it’s so new and I’ll feature some more in future posts. Hopefully, I’ll take a trip to Alton Towers later this year – I’ll let you know what I think!

Theme Park Accidents Videos

OK, if you’re here looking for theme park accidents videos then you are truly gruesome.

Unfortunately, every now and again theme park accidents do happen, but they are rare and any reputable theme park has endless safety measures in place.

My friend used to work at Alton Towers in the UK, and he once explained how many safety checks were done daily, how often maintenance was done, and h0w they had contingency plans for just about anything that could go wrong. In fact, they regularly had safety sessions where staff would volunteer to get stuck on different rides and be rescued…just in case. It definitely put my mind at rest every time I visited the park.

So, if you’re heading to a theme park and worried about the rides, stop panicking! You’re more likely to get knocked over by a car than have an accident on a roller coaster.

But, if you are looking for a gruesome video, well here it is. It’s from a ride in China and it isn’t pleasant because kids get seriously hurt, so if you have a weak stomach, don’t watch (you have been warned).

There are hundreds – actually more like thousands – of Disney theme park videos online. Just about everybody who visits Disney takes a camera and for many that is now a video camera because they are so cheap to buy and easy to use. Gone are the days when creating video meant lugging a huge camera around plus a bag of accessories.

As well as home videos of Disney theme parks, there are also Disney’s own videos… and Disney are masters at selling their parks through video – making everything look fun, exciting, breath taking and colorful. Who wouldn’t want to visit?

The Disney theme park video below shows Animal Kingdom which, like all of Disney’s parks, seems to have something for all the family.

I’m always amazed how anyone keeps hold of their camera during a ride like this but you definitely experience this ride along with the film maker.

Hulk does have a reputation for breaking down a fair bit, so I hope it’s working when you’re next there.

The online video directories are packed full of theme park videos. Why? Well, people have been seeking out fun and excitement since the beginning of time and for many of them, if they aren’t enjoying a trip to a theme park, they’re planning their next trip.

For some it’s the thrill of riding the fastest, highest, scariest roller coasters, while for others it’s simply the magical feeling that theme parks seem to have about them. Happy smiley faces, excited children and the rush of adrenaline are all theme park norms.

Theme parks differ from amusement parks in that they are usually based around a specific theme (hence the name) so all the rides and attractions will be related to that topic (however loosely). The larger theme parks are divided into different sections (often called “lands”) with each based around smaller themes within the larger one. For example, Walt Disney World is actually 4 theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) each with a different focus. And within those are different areas related to their main focal point (Fantasy, Technological Advancement, Movies and Animals).

There are a multitude of theme parks around the world: some owned by corporations, others family-owned; some on a mammoth scale and others really quite small.
